God's Design for Marriage

Marriage was God's idea from the beginning. In Genesis 2, God creates woman and brings her to the man — and the response is wonder and celebration. Marriage is meant to be a covenant, a deep partnership, and a picture of the relationship between Christ and the Church.

That's a high calling. Which is why marriage requires intentionality, humility, and a lot of grace.

"Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh."— Genesis 2:24

Scriptures on Marriage

"Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her."

— Ephesians 5:25

"A man who finds a wife finds what is good and receives favor from the Lord."

— Proverbs 18:22

"Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor."

— Ecclesiastes 4:9

"Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins."

— 1 Peter 4:8

"Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud."

— 1 Corinthians 13:4

Building a Healthy Marriage

The strongest marriages are not the ones with no problems — they're the ones with two people committed to working through problems together. Some practical principles from Scripture:

  • Serve each other. Ephesians 5 describes mutual submission and sacrificial love.
  • Communicate honestly. Ephesians 4:15 — speak truth in love.
  • Forgive quickly. Don't let the sun go down on your anger (Ephesians 4:26).
  • Pray together. Couples who pray together stay together — there's real wisdom in that.
