The Question Is Worth Asking
Asking whether God exists is not a sign of weak faith or rebellious skepticism. It's one of the most fundamental questions a human being can ask. At Riverview Church, we believe faith is big enough to hold honest questions — and that genuine searching tends to lead somewhere.
What follows is not an exhaustive philosophical argument. It is a brief, honest look at some of the reasons many thoughtful people across history have concluded that God is real.
Reasons Many People Believe
- The existence of the universe. Everything that exists has a cause. The universe began — which raises the question: what caused it? The "uncaused cause" argument has been taken seriously by philosophers for centuries.
- The existence of order. The fine-tuning of the physical constants of the universe — the forces, masses, and values that make life possible — is staggeringly precise. Many scientists find it more plausible that this precision reflects design than chance.
- Moral intuition. Nearly every human culture across history has held that some things are genuinely wrong — not just inconvenient. Where does that universal moral sense come from?
- The resurrection of Jesus. Historians broadly agree that Jesus was crucified, that the tomb was empty, and that his followers believed they had encountered him alive. The question of how to explain these facts is worth serious consideration.
An Invitation
You don't have to resolve every philosophical question before exploring faith. Many people have found that the most significant evidence for God is not an argument but a relationship — the experience of praying, engaging with Scripture, and living in community with people who know Him.
If you're curious, the most honest thing you can do is show up somewhere and look for yourself.
